We’ve Been Talking to Children for Social Change: Here’s What You Need To Know
When working on communication for children, it’s easy to default to bright visuals or simplified language. But effective child-centred communication is not about making things “cute.” It’s about designing messages that are emotionally safe, easy to understand, and shaped by the realities of children’s lives.
We have a decade long record of being entrusted with NGOs and social enterprises to talk to children and youth about difficult topics that many people shy away from including mental health (Shii Nay Mal Campaign), diversity and inclusion (Beyond Earth Story Book), to menstrual health (Pankalay Comic Book) and more.

Behaviour Change for Children : Four Principles That Matter Most
1. Talk through their world, not over it
Children are shaped by the people around them. Parents and caregivers are key influencers in children’s attitudes and behaviours. Our campaigns speak to adults as enablers and design activities that encourage quality time, allowing children and caregivers to talk, play, and learn together.
2. Lead with empathy and emotional safety
Children engage when they feel understood. Especially for big complex topics like mental health and diversity and inclusion, communication needs to acknowledge feelings, reduce fear, and avoid blame.
3. Keep language simple and ideas concrete
One message at a time. Clear words, familiar situations, and relatable stories with compelling characters help children understand complex topics without overwhelming or confusing them.
4. Design for play, interaction, and participation
Children learn by doing. Games, storytelling, drawing, and hands-on activities turn messages into shared experiences. They reinforce learning through play and help children explore ideas actively, rather than passively receiving information.
If you’re planning a campaign that needs to speak meaningfully to children and the adults who shape their world, Bridge can help design empathy-led, culturally grounded communication strategies for impact. Reach out to us here: info@bridge.com.mm.
